Today on our new Wedding Wednesday series, we are talking about 7 tips for amazing outfit choices for your engagement session! A question we get asked quite often from our brides is “What should I wear to my engagement session?” This post is filled with some great tips and inspiration for all of our Purdy Brides (and future #purdybrides!) on what to wear as you prepare for your upcoming engagement shoot!
1. We always suggest to our couples that they bring two outfits to an engagement session. One outfit is normally on the dressier side and one outfit is more relaxed and casual.
2. How “coordinated” do you have to be? First, let me state, coordinating, doesn’t mean wearing the exact colors. Wearing the same color in different shades, or tones is more ideal than trying to find the EXACT color your fiance is wearing. Pictures can become very uniform looking if you are both wearing khaki bottoms and white shirts. (Not to mention, it’s a very outdated look!) It doesn’t have to be complicated. I am guilty of over thinking outfits when we do our own photos, however some of my favorite outfits have been when the the guy is wearing a simple v-neck or button down!
3. Mixing patterns and colors – If one of you is wearing something with a lot of color and pattern, sometimes it’s best to have the other person wear a neutral to tone it down a bit. On that note – If you’re wearing plaid or other patterns, the bigger the better!! Larger plaid photographs better than tiny little-checkered patterns. It would be better to have a solid dress shirt than a shirt with teeny tiny patterns. The camera can’t pick those tiny patterns up from far away.
4. Don’t overdress your partner… Meaning, you both should be equal on how formal your attire is. If the bride is wearing a little black dress…. the groom probably shouldn’t be in shorts and flip-flops. Or vis versa – If your guy is in a suit, you probably shouldn’t show up in a little sundress.
5. Accessories – Necklaces, scarves, bracelets…. I love them all! They can add so much to an outfit – side note, ladies. If you are wearing a bracelet, try to wear it opposite of your engagement ring (so on your right hand!) This way, it doesn’t compete with the ring!
6. This tip is SUPER important, so pay close attention! Attire that is flattering to your skin tone makes all the difference! Make sure you wear something that you’re comfortable in. We will show you and teach you how to pose in ways that are most flattering to you, but you’ll love your images so much more if you wear an outfit that you’re comfortable and CONFIDENT in!! (Confidence photographs well!!) 😉
7. No matter what the weather is like, light, neutral colors appear more light and airy in photos! For extra swoon-worthy images, you might want to consider wearing something long and flowy too! If you are looking for some super cute dresses for your upcoming shoot, ModCloth is one of my most favorite places to shop! They have a variety of dresses in colors, styles and sizes!
